“Rest” — God’s meaning

To relax or sleep: Ceasing exertion to recover energy.
To lean or support: Letting an object lie on something else.

  • In the Bible, rest represents much more than physical sleep or taking a break. It is a core spiritual concept meaning trust in God, freedom from striving, and reconciliation with the Creator. It signifies ceasing from our own efforts to control our lives and relying entirely on God’s grace and provision.
  • It means ceasing from trying to justify ourselves by our own works and fully resting in the completed, redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
  • True restoration requires addressing different areas of depletion: physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social, and spiritual rest.
  • Spiritual rest is a state of deep peace and soul-level rejuvenation. It is the practice of disconnecting from life’s frantic pace to connect with a higher power[GOD], nature, or your core purpose. Rather than sleeping, it involves releasing the pressure to control everything and re-calibrating your focus.
